Abstract

Artificial silks, horsehair, &c. are delustred and improved in their covering properties by incorporating therein a finely divided oxide of antimony. In addition to being delustred, yarns so treated knit more closely and weave better. The finely divided antimony oxide may be added to the spinning solution, or the threads &c. may be treated with a suspension or dispersion of the oxide preferably in the presence of a swelling agent for the cellulosic material of which the threads are composed. The oxide is preferably used in very fine form, for example, with particles of 0,1-5 microns; and the dispersion of the oxide may be assisted by the addition of dispersing agents or protective colloids such as turkey red oil, oleic acid, linseed or olive oil, diethylene glycol, heavy mineral oil or castor oil, either before or after the grinding of the oxide or to the spinning solution. The method is applicable to threads &c. made from viscose, cuprammonia cellulose and nitrocellulose, or from cellulose acetate and other organic esters, or from cellulose ethers.
