Abstract

Textile materials are delustred by applying an insoluble dulling agent in a medium comprising a dilute caustic alkaline solution of a cellulose derivative of the kind incompletely soluble in caustic soda at normal temperatures, but capable of being brought into solution by subjecting a mixture of the said derivative and sodium hydroxide solution either to temporary cooling until crystals of ice are formed or to the action of a colloid mill or of dispersing agents or soluble colloids, and thereafter treating the textile materials with an acid or acid gas. Examples of such cellulose derivatives are described in Specifications 389,534, 410,152, 410,153, 416,590 and 420,529. In a modification, the dulling agent is applied in the form of a soluble compound and is subsequently precipitated as insoluble dulling material in or on the textile material. Examples of suitable dulling agents are zinc oxide, titanium oxide, stannic oxide, tin phosphate, china clay, barium sulphate, and antimony oxide. The textile material or article is passed through the alkaline solution containing the dulling agent and the cellulose derivative, passed through rolls or the like, and then treated with a dilute acid such as sulphuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, formic, or acetic acid, or with a mildly acid gas such as carbon dioxide. In an example, a glycol cellulose of the kind described is brought into solution in caustic soda in the presence of a dispersing agent, according to the method of Specification 410,152, and zinc oxide and a softening material are added. Viscose artificial silk fabric is passed through the bath and then treated in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. In another example, the dulling agent used is titanium dioxide, and the precipitating agent sulphuric acid.
