Abstract

377,229. Valves. HOLDEN& BROOKE, Ltd. and BROOKE, R. W., Sirius Works, West Gorton, Manchester. April 22, 1931, No. 11928. [Class 135.] In a hot water heating-system in which a circulating-pump is employed in a byepass across a non-return valve, means are provided for automatically isolating the pump when not in use. The inlet and outlet passages 2, 3 leading to the pump are controlled by hinged valves 4, 5 linked by members 7, 8 to a lever 9 connected by a rod 10 to a piston 11 open to the pipe 1. The other side of the piston is connected by a valve 15 alternatively to the atmosphere or to the pump delivery. The spring-controlled valve 15 automatically maintains the connection 13 to the atmosphere when the pump is idle. The valve 5 acts as the non- return valve in the pipe 1 in the position shown, and the valves 4, 5 are moved to that position when the pump starts, by the delivery pressure acting through connection 14 on the piston 11. In modifications, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown, the linked valves 4, 5 may be loaded by a weight to close the passages 2, 3 when the pump is idle, while the valve 5 is forced into the position shown in Fig. 1 by the delivery pressure when the pump is working. The weight may be inside the pipe 1 to avoid joints, or outside to permit adjustment. If the pump is turbinedriven, steam pressure may be used to actuate the valves ; if the pump is electrically driven, a solenoid may be used, Fig. 5, not shown. In a modification, Fig. 6, the valves 4a, 5a form a single unit, the valve 4a moving into the passage 2 as the valve 5a moves toward the seat 16. The valve 5a may be larger than the valve 4a so that the combination remains in closed position under liquid pressure, and a weighted arm 22a may be attached to the spindle 28 externally. In order to prevent leakage through the valve 4a, it may be in the form of a cup, Fig. 8, not shown, seating upon an annular seating of rubber. Specification 269,984, [Class 64 (ii), Heating systems &c.], is referred to.
