Abstract

376,035. Stuffing-boxes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Thompson, P. W.; 2000, 2nd Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) July 23, 1931, No. 21091. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1930. [Class 122 (v).] In a turbine driven by highly superheated steam, saturated steam, at higher pressure and lower temperature than the motive fluid, is utilized to seal and cool the shaft. The saturated steam is maintained in contact with the shaft in a chamber 9 between labyrinth packings 12, 16. Leakage from the said chamber collects in a chamber 10 and may be utilized in a .low pressure stage of the turbine. The pressure difference between the packing and motive fluids may be maintained constant by a valve in the saturated steam supply regulated by hand or by the pressure of the two fluids.
