Connected to source of high or low pressure.-In labyrinth packing for a turbine shaft b in which at low loads packing fluid is admitted through pipes l, g to a space e in the packing, overheating is avoided by cooling the packing fluid before or at its admission to the packing. The cooling may be effected in a surface apparatus, when the cooling medium may be condensate. Alternatively, the cooling medium may be mixed with the packing medium by means of spraying nozzles. In the arrangement shown, water is admitted to the pipe g through a cock i. During normal working the leakage steam is cooled by water admitted to a space f by a pipe h.
