Abstract
375,459. Valve gear; cylinders. BUTTERS, F. A. G., 11, Christchurch Road, Brixton Hill, London. April 7, 1931, No. 10221. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] In an engine having valves arranged in a cover a<1> removable independently of the cam shafts at opposite sides of the cylinder, the valves are actuated by rockers k pivoted on the cover and directly engaging the cams k<3>. These cams have inclined faces. The valves may have their inner faces recessed to follow the curved inner surface of the combustion chamber. Fig. 4 shows diametrically-opposed inlet valves v<1>, v<3> arranged between opposed exhaust valves v<2>, v<4>, the inlet passages c<1>, c<2> being arranged to give a whirling effect to the incoming charge, which assists scavenging. There are two sparking- plugs s<1>, s<2>. In a modification, there is only one sparking-plug, and the inlet valves are arranged diametrically opposite the exhaust valves.
