Abstract

375,147. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. SCHARFENBERGKUPPLING AKT.-GES., 105, Kurfurstenstrasse, and SCHARFENBERG, K., Sudetenstrasse, Nicolassee, both in Berlin. Sept. 12, 1931, No. 25641. [Class 103 (v).] In automatic couplings for railway vehicles of the vertical plane type in which the two similar coupler-heads are secured in interengaging relationship by means of coacting catches pivoted on vertical axes in the coupler-heads, the pivotal axes of the two catches are arranged to lie in one plane with the centres of the forward portions or corresponding coupling-elements on the two heads. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the invention is applied to couplingsas described in Specification 334,151, [Class 103 (v), Railway &c. vehicles, Draught &c. appliances for], the cylindrical bolt a being advanced forwardly so as to be coaxial with the eye c, which is engaged by the bolt of the other head. The axes p about which the catches r pivot are disposed in the centre line of the cylinders a, while inclined surfaces x ensure the necessary lateral displacement to effect a coupling. In a modification, the main portion of the bolt a is polygonal, only the end portion that enters the eye c being of cylindrical or conical shape. In another construction, Fig. 8, the bolt portions a are made prismatic, the eye portions are replaced by hooks c<1>, and the inclined surfaces d<1> serve as a protection for the catches r, suitable guiding-elements being added, if desired. In a still further modification, projecting claws or hooks on the upper and lower portions of the coupler-heads are designed to lock behind each other, the axes of the pivoted catches lying in one plane with the hook surfaces in contact.
