J. C. WHITRIDGE ET AL CAR COUPLING DEVICE Original Filed March 22, 1923 Patented Apr. 28, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,535,972 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CLIFFORD WHI'IRIDGE, GEORGE TI EWKSBURY JOHNSON, AND HARRY HAD/[IL- TON WOLFE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLIN G DEVICE.
Original application filed March 22, 1923, Serial No. 626,934. Divided and this application filed November 5, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN C. lVHITIunon, Gnoncn T. JOHNSON, and HARRY H. 0mm, citizens of the United States, and residents of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Coupling Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in car coupling devices, and more particularly to such as contemplate the connecting of an automatic coupling with a coupling of the hook type, this application being a division of application for patent filed by J. C. l/Vhitridge, G. T. Johnson, H. WV. Stertzbach and H. H. Wolfe March 22, 1928, and.
designatedby Serial No. (326,934.
An object of the present invention is to provide simple and eihcient connecting means between couplings of the automatic and hook types, which connecting means shall be flexible and capable of such vertical folding when the cars come together as not to interfere with the bufling relation of the cars.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in, certain novel features of construction and con'ibinatimis of parts as llereinaftcr set forth and pointed. out in the claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view showing an embodiment of our invention, and
Figure 2 is a side view.
A car coupling of the M. C. B. automatic type is represented at 1 and 2 indicates a coupling of the hook type.
The knuckle 3 of the coupling 1 is provided near its free end with a vertical hole for the accommodation of a vertical pin 4 and said knuckle is provided in its free end with an intermediate transverse slot 5 which intersects the hole through which the pin 4 passes.
The connecting devices between the two couplings includes a flat plate 6 having an Opening through its rear portion, said plate Serial No. 672,856.
entering the slot 5 in the knuckle and pivotally engaging the vertical pin 4. The plate 6 is provided with rearwardly projecting hooks 7 7 at its outer or forward corners and these hooks are engaged through eyes 8 at the ends of a substantially V-shaped link 9 which, in turn, is engaged at its bight with a vertical eye 10 at one end of a horizontal link 11. This link 11 is approximately trapezoidal in form and its inner wall corresponds approximately to the cross-sectional contour of the hook coupling. It will be noted that the eye 10 forms a narrow central extension of the link 11 so that the eye may fit closely in the acute angle presented by the V-shaped link 9 while the body of the link 11 may engage closely around the hook coupler. The possibility of accidental separation of the parts is thus minimized while they may readily accommodate the relative movement of the cars.
When the cars come together, the links 9 and 11 fold downwardly between the couplings and therefore do not interfere with the buffing action of the cars.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In adevice of the class described, the combination of an automatic coupler including a knuckle, and a vertical pin in the free end portion of the knuckle, a hook coupler, an eye engaged around said pin, and a fold able connection between said eye and the hook coupler, said connection including a Vshaped link carried by the and a trapezoidal link engaged with the hook coupler and provided at its Outer end with a relatively narrow central extension engaged in the apex of the V-sha-ped link.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of an automatic coupler including a knuckle, and a pin mounted vertically in the free end portion of the knuckle, a hook coupler, a plate pivotally engaged on the pin and Within the knuckle, hooks on the opposite edges of said plate in front of the knuckle, a V-shaped link having its ends engaged with said hooks, and a link connection between said link and the hook coupler.
3. In a. device of the class described, the
eye on said link to engage in the V-shapel hnk.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of two suhscrih 15 ing witnesses.
