Abstract
453,944. Automatic couplings for vehicles. ANDERSON, J. W., Edmondson's Lodge, Colville Street, Wavertree, Liverpool. April 10, 1935, No. 11043. (Class 103 (v)] Relates to automatic couplings for rail or road vehicles of the type in which a coupling- bar B on one vehicle having an arrow head is adapted to enter a socket A on the opposed vehicle and to be engaged by spring-controlled latches D that coact with notches b<1> near the end of the bar, the latches being released for uncoupling purposes by means of a handcontrolled cam. In order to provide for angling on curves, and for differences in height of the bar and socket due to loading, both the bar and socket are jointed to the vehicle by universal joints, stops being provided to restrict the extent of the angular movements. As shown, the bar B is mounted for angling about a pin 5 and for vertical displacement about a pin K, the movements being limited by adjustable pins 10 and by shoulders k<1>. Similarly, the socket A is adapted to pivot about pins 2, 3 mutually at right-angles. The locking latches are provided with bevelled ends d<1> and are released by a cam E working in a recess a<3> in .the socket. An additional pin g<2> for securing the coupling may be passed through aligned holes in the bar and socket, being retained in position by the cam E engaging a notch in the pin.
