Abstract

Carbonaceous materials such as coal and lignite are subjected, prior to destructive hydrogenation, to a mild oxidation to reduce their caking properties. The material is ground finely and treated with hot air or other oxygen-containing gas at 250-650 DEG F. for several hours. Higher temperatures and finer grinding shorten the period necessary. The treated material may be mixed with water and heavy oil, so that the mineral matter separates out, while a paste of oil and coal or lignite remains, which may be destructively hydrogenated in known manner.
