Hydrogenation, destructive. - Carbonaceous materials such as anthracites, coals, lignites, peat, wood, petroleum, asphalts, organic vegetable or animal materials, or the products of pyrogenation of any of these materials, are converted into lighter hydrocarbons by treatment with nascent hydrogen produced from reactants introduced independently into the reaction vessel. Shale oil mixed with iron and copper shavings is introduced into an autoclave at 300‹ C, and 300 atmospheres pressure containing an aqueous solution of a metal halide such as AlCl3.3NaCl; light oils are obtained. Nascent hydrogen may also be obtained by reaction of water or steam upon coke, which may be that produced in the process, or upon coal dust or lignite.
