Abstract
236,002. Jolly, J. C., and Wheeler, R. V. May 1, 1924. Materials for making coke and other products.- In the carbonization of bituminous coal to obtain a metallurgical coke with a reduced sulphur percentage admixture is made with a material which when heated will produce a high proportion of hydrogen or other reducing gas and which between 400‹ and 600‹ C. will remain inert in relation to the coal treated as regards the production of binding material such as might agglomerate the particles. Suitable materials are anthracite or semi-anthracite coal but semi-bituminous coal which may be as mined or weathered or bituminous coal which has been weathered or subjected to carbonization below 600‹ C., or peat or lignite or the residues from their carbonization below 600‹ C. may be used alone or in admixture with the anthracite. Those materials, which have a sulphur content of 1 per cent or less are suitable.
