[Class 94 (i).] In the assembly of cigarettes in batches in which one row contains a smaller number of cigarettes than the others, laterally displaceable guide faces are used to position the smaller row in a positive manner. If batches of twenty are to be formed, the superposed rows contain seven, six and seven cigarettes respectively. The cigarettes descend between vertical guides 2 from the hopper, the bottom layer being removed therefrom at intervals on to an inclined table 3 and beneath guides 8. The layer then falls, between flared guides 9, 10, on to a table 11. The next layer contains six cigarettes only, the right-hand compartment being stopped by any suitable device operated by a bellcrank lever 17. By the time that the layer of six is ready to fall between the guides 9, 10, slides 21, 22 are advanced through slots in the sides into the positions shown, so that the bevelled edges cause the layer to be correctly disposed with regard to the other layers. A succeeding layer of seven cigarettes is added and the batch of twenty is fed away for packeting. In a modified form, portions of the guides 9, 10 may be adapted to be swung inwardly at appropriate times.
