Abstract

1524463 Dispensing articles; feeding cigarettes to an endless conveyer MOLINS Ltd 21 March 1977 [20 March 1976] 11325/76 Heading B8U and B8A A hopper comprises parallel vertical channels in each of which a single column of cigarettes is located, a pair of horizontal plates 4 being provided for engaging the ends of the lowest row of cigarettes while a plurality of parallel needlelike elements 5 is provided above each plate 4 for supporting the one but lowest row of cigarettes. The plates 4 are movable away from each other to release the lowest row of cigarettes which drops on to a conveyer belt 20 and downward movement of the cigarettes is assisted by means of air which is blasted through internal air passages (8), Fig. 4 (not shown), provided in the elements 5. When the plates 4 are returned to their original position the elements 5 are then retracted to permit the columns of cigarettes to drop by an amount equivalent to the diameter of one cigarette so that the lowest row of cigarettes is again supported by the plates 4, after which the elements 5 return to their original cigarette-supporting condition. The conveyer belt 20, Fig. 5, is provided with pivotally-mounted U-frames 22 from which pillars 26 project upwardly through apertures in the belt 20, the frames 22 being provided with rollers 28 which co-operate with a stationary cam track 27 to cause progressive upward movement of the pillars 26 to enable superimposed rows of cigarettes to be retained on the belt 20, as shown. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the bottom of the hopper is curved to conform with a rotary drum (34) having successive groups of longitudinally extending flutes (35) formed at its periphery, each such group receiving the lowermost row of cigarettes in the hopper when positioned below the hopper, the flutes of the group being connected by means of internal drum passages with a source of suction which creates an air-flow which helps to accelerate the cigarettes downwards towards the flutes. The cigarettes are transferred from the drum (34) to a conveyer belt (40).
