[Class 94 (i)] A packing machine is provided with apparatus for placing a separating element between articles to be packed, the apparatus comprising a conveyer to move a batch of articles in a predetermined path, a folding-guide extending lengthwise of the movement of the batch and about which a blank for the separating element is folded, a device operating in timed relation with the conveyer to fold the blank, and means aligned with the guide to separate the batch into two parts which are moved by the conveyer on each side of the guide. The batch may consist of cigarettes, or of a number of block shaped articles, contained iin a single row or two or more superposed rows. A batch of twenty cigarettes in two superposed rows, for example, may be moved from beneath a hopper 2, Fig. 1, by one of a number of pushers 3 carried by a continuously-moving conveyer 4. A folding-guide 37 is supported above the bed 5 of the packing machine between side guides 36 between which the cigarettes are moved. Blanks a, Fig. 12, for providing separating elements b, Fig. 13, are stored flat in a magazine 7 and are fed singly by a reciprocating toothed feeder between moving belts 20 which deliver each blank above the folding-guide 37, as shown in Fig. 9. A grooved block 39, Fig. 10, which is supported above the guide 37, is moved downwards to fold the blank about the guide, and is then moved along the bed towards the oncoming batch of cigarettes to position the blank in a depression 164 with the leading edge of the blank beneath thin plates that guide the batch on to the blank. The.front edge of the guide separates the batch of cigarettes into two parts, and the movement of the. pusher 3 delivers the cigarettes on to the panels c, Fig. 13, of the blank on each side of the separator b. The blank then engages the separator and moves the batch and the blank to any desired position, for example on to a slide which is to be inserted in a shell. Foils or other wrapping material may be folded about the batch and the separator, or about the batch before the separator is applied.
