Abstract

962,446. Packaging machines. OTTO HANSEL G.m.b.H. May 19, 1961 [Nov. 10, 1960], No. 18259/61. Heading B8C. Apparatus for forming piles of flat, fragile objects for packing, comprises a conveyer provided with fingers for extracting the objects from feeding shoots arranged along the conveyer, and a supply unit for stiffening shims of cardboard or similar material mounted on the upstream side of the shoots. The objects, which may be biscuits 13<SP>1</SP>, are stacked as shown on a cardboard shim 16 and may be enclosed in a wrapper. The machine is similar to that described in Specification 828,618 but has a shoot 15 containing the shims 16. The shims are pushed by a reciprocating pusher 22 down an inclined guide 18 to be positioned between fingers 3 on the conveyer 2. The shims are carried by the fingers 3 along plastics slide bars 4 below the shoots A-D arranged as in the above Specification and receive piles of objects. The piles are spaced apart as shown to the right of Fig. 3 but as they are moved to the left they are urged into abutting relationship by means of a plate 30. The plate is reciprocated transversely to the direction of motion of the conveyer 2 and simultaneously moved longitudinally with the conveyer. The ends of the cardboard shim are then folded up as shown in Fig. 7, and the assembly wrapped by means not shown.
