Articles in a single file on a conveyer belt 31 are acted upon so as to be discharged in three files each of four articles F 1 , F 2 , F 3 , (Fig. 2). The articles are carried by the conveyer 31 until the leading article engages a removable abutment 32 (top of Fig. 2). An abutment 33 operated by a cylinder 39, (Fig. 3), displaces the articles 1-4 laterally (2nd diagram, Fig. 2) and while the articles 5-8 proceed on to the stop 32 the articles 1-4 proceed until engaged by a fixed stop 43 (3rd diagram, Fig. 2). An abutment 34 then displaces the articles 9-12 and a bent over tail 34a of this abutment prevents further movement for the time being of the articles 13, 14,... so as to ensure a gap between the article 13 and the three groups of articles when they arrive in their final position (bottom of Fig. 2). The abutment 34 is returned to its original position and the abutment 32 is raised temporarily so that the groups 5-8 and 9-12 may proceed as shown in the (4th diagram of Fig. 2). The three groups of articles are then operated on by a member 44 which alternately pushes and pulls on alternate batches of articles. They are then engaged respectively by a ram plate 49 or 49<SP>1</SP> so that the batches are loaded into bags or sacks 51 held in openmouthed condition upon duckbills 52.
