[Class 143.] Permanent records, apparatus for giving. -Weighing- apparatus is provided with an electric recording device in which members whose relative positions correspond to different magnitudes or values of the load or weight, are adapted to be electrically connected, when desired, so as to produce a spark or sparks therebetween and thereby produce on a paper or other chart or sheet a record of the magnitude or value of the load or weight. The spindle of the indicating pointer 1 carries an insulated finger 3 provided with two electrodes 5, 6 which respectively move adjacent to, but out of contact with, a series of fixed electrodes 7 and a corresponding series of continuous rings 8. The electrodes 7 lie on concentric circles, the electrodes of each circle being electrically connected and each circle of electrodes being connected to one of the rings 8. A receptacle 14 is provided for an induction coil, and a slot 17 permits a record chart or paper to be inserted into the spark gap between the electrode 6 and the rings 8. When a record of the weight is to be obtained, a chart is inserted and the operator depresses a pushbutton 8a to close the primary circuit of the induction coil. The secondary circuit then causes a spark to pass across a gap 21 to the finger 3, a second spark to jump the gap between the electrode 5 and the nearest electrode 7, and a third spark to pierce the record chart in the slot 17 thereby producing the record. The record chart may bear a series of graduated concentric circles and radial lines to facilitate the reading, or, if the record chart is blank, a transparent graduated chart or templet may be applied to the blank chart. The operator ensures correct setting of the chart in the slot 17 by bringing marks on the chart into register with orifices in the chart holder. A permanent record of the setting may be obtained by providing the apparatus with a chart-punching or marking device.
