Abstract

762,396. Electric measuring systems. WAYNE KERR LABORATORIES, Ltd., and CALVERT, R. April 4, 1955 [April 2, 1954], No. 9818/54. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for measuring small distances comprises an electrical bridge for comparing two capacities, one formed by a first pair of electrodes movable towards and away from one another by calibrated adjusting means, and the other formed by a second pair of electrodes. movable towards and away from one another and of effective electrical area which is a known small fraction of that of the first pair, whereby, when the bridge is balanced, the spacing of the second pair of electrodes is a known fraction of that of the first pair. The second pair of electrodes may be formed by a probe and a gauge to be tested, and the probe and a master gauge successively. In Fig. 1 the ratio arms of the bridge are formed by the two secondary windings 12, 13 of a transformer 10, the primary 11 of which is fed from an alternating current source. The neutral line 14 is connected to one end of a winding 15 the other end of which is connected to electrodes 22, 23 of the pairs 20, 21. The remaining electrodes 26, 27 of the pairs are connected to the free ends of windings 12, 13. The electrodes of pair 21 are composed of a small plate 23 and a large plate 27, the small plate being surrounded by a guard ring 25 connected to the neutral line 14. The plates are relatively movable by a micrometer reading to one inch in ten thousandths. Similarly a large electrode 26 co-operates with a small probe electrode 22 surrounded by a guard ring 24 connected to the neutral line 14. The effective area of plates 22, 26 may be one hundredth of that of plates 23, 27. The output of winding 17 is fed to a detector 18 to indicate out-of-balance of the bridge. To test a gauge, the probe 22 is placed a convenient distance from the surface of the gauge, which is connected to act as electrode 26. The bridge is then balanced by the micrometer. The standard gauge is substituted, and the bridge rebalanced. The difference between the two micrometer readings is then one hundred times the difference between the gauge dimensions. The probe is arranged on the end of the inner conductor of a screened cable, the screen being connected to the guard ring.
