Abstract

In a process for extracting and refining sulphur from raw materials, e.g. gas purification materials, by the use of organic solvents, an amount of hot solvent insufficient for complete solution is employed and the sulphur is fused and removed in the liquid state together with the solvent. Sulphur remaining in the raw material is extracted by a second treatment with the hot solvent and the mass again employed for gas purification. The sulphur and solvent separate in two layers on standing and the liquid sulphur is drawn off, the solvent being used for the treatment of further raw material. As solvents, benzene, benzines, light tar oil and mineral oil products are employed, increased pressure being used with low-boiling hydrocarbons. The crude sulphur so separated is purified by heating with bleaching clays and such solvents as dissolve sulphur to any extent only at raised temperatures, e.g. benzene and toluene. An example is furnished.
