Abstract

Residual oil, obtained by the distillation of a crude petroleum oil, is deasphalted with liquid propane and the asphalt thus obtained is deoiled with liquid butane. Apparatus is described in which the deasphalting and deoiling are carried out in vertical towers held at elevated temperature with downward flow of the oil or asphalt against a countercurrent flow of the propane or butane, propane and butane being recovered for re-use. The asphalt from the deasphalting tower is passed to the deoiling tower while still containing some propane.
