Abstract
An asphaltic material containing asphaltines is separated into at least two fractions, one of which contains the asphaltines and is free from resins and oils, by treating each volume of the material with at least two volumes of a solvent comprising at least one C 4-8 paraffin hydrocarbon, the temperature being at least 175 DEG F. and sufficient to allow a bulk interface its form between a separated asphaltine fraction and the solvent solution of residual materials, the temperature and pressure being adjusted to give a solvent density at least as great as K \sS Mol-wt. (K being between 3,5 and 4,3) but less than that density at which no liquid phase separation of asphaltines occurs, and separating the asphaltine fraction while in the liquid phase. The other fraction can be separated into resins and oils by a similar treatment but at temperatures and pressures relating to a solvent density between 0,23 and K \sS Mol. wt. Preferred solvents are normal and isopentane.
