Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) March 3, 1931, No. 6596. Convention date, March 3, 1930. [Class 37.] A self-reducing resistance is arranged in series with a fixed resistance to form a unit having a predetermined minimum resistance value. A base 10 of insulating material has a screw cap 12 to fit a screw socket and is provided with a groove in which a wire resistance 11 is wound. The base 10 is formed with an internal U-shaped passage which is filled with tellurium 14. One end of the wire resistance 11 is connected to the screw cap 12, the other end being connected to one end of the tellurium resistance 14 by means of a connector 13. The other end of the tellurium resistance is connected to the centre contact 18 by means of a connecting wire 16 which is insulated from the cap 12. The resistance unit may be connected in series with the starting winding of a split-phase motor to limit the starting current therethrough, the starting circuit being closed by a relay in series with the running winding.
