365,697. Universal joints. GEROLD, C., 1134, South Wetherly Drive, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Nov. 13, 1930, No. 34234. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] A lubricant-retaining casing for universal joints and like flexible connections comprises three interleaved curved shells J, K, L slightly spaced apart, the outer and inner shells J, L being flanged and bolted to an annular housing- element H secured to the shaft B by flanges F, G with interposed packing 14, while the intermediate shell K is formed with a collar K<1> fitting tightly on the shaft A, preferably with packing 12 clamped by divided rings 10. The shells J, K, L terminate respectively at 18, 17, 19 to allow movements of the joint, and the spacing of the shells J, L can be adjusted by varying the thickness of shims 16 between their flanges. A hole 20 in the inner shell allows oil to be centrifugally forced into the spaces, where it is retained by capillary action to serve as its own seal.
