Abstract

538,625. Shaft &c. couplings. JULIEN, M. F. A. Feb. 8, 1940, No. 2456 Convention date, Feb. 8, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] In a coupling of the kind in which one part comprises a casing having inward projections alternating with outward projections on a member forming the other part of the coupling, a body of resilient material being adhered to the inner surface of the casing and the outer surface of the member, cavities in the resilient material or spaces between the latter and the inner surface of the casing are provided in the regions which lie beyond the vertices of the projections on the inner member. The stress in the resilient material is thereby rendered substantially uniform throughout. In one form, Fig. 2, the casing 2 having a flange 2a by which it is secured to one shaft or part to be coupled is provided with inward bulges 2b alternating with the angle portions 1c of an inner member 1 secured to the other shaft or part to be coupled. The parts 1, 2 are bonded to resilient material 3 provided in the regions between the casing and the parts 1c with elongated cavities 4. In a modification, the casing is cylindrical and blocks corresponding in shape to the bulges 2b are secured to the inner surface of the casing. Instead of cavities 4, spaces are provided between the casing and the material 3. Fig. 6 shows a coupling in the form of an eight-armed star having cavities 4 in the resilient material 3.
