Abstract

Finely divided and apparently amorphous calcium sulphate is obtained by treating suitable calcium compounds other than the sulphate, for example, the mineral or precipitated carbonate, or the oxide or hydroxide with sulphuric acid, with or without sulphates such as alkali sulphates or bisulphates, in such quantity that excess of free acid remains after completion of the reaction, and of a strength insufficient to effect any solution of the calcium sulphate. Thus, sulphuric acid of specific gravity 1,75 is rapidly added to calcium carbonate in 35-40 per cent excess over that required for neutralization. Alternatively, a lower excess of oleum or R.O.V. may be added. The acid should preferably be in excess from the commencement. Excess acid may be removed by washing, followed if desired by treatment with an alkaline solution, or suitable alkaline earth, as barium hydrate.
