Abstract
319,228. Spence & Sons, Ltd., P., and Crundall, S. F. W. June, 14, 1928. Calcium sulphate.-An extremely finely divided and apparently amorphous form of anhydrous calcium sulphate is obtained by treating hydrated forms thereof with suitable dehydrating agents. The hydrated salt may be mixed with sulphuric acid of specific gravity 1.6-1.84 and the mixture be maintained at 130‹ C. with agitation for say 1-2 hours, or be gradually heated to 140‹ C., or be allowed to stand at ordinary temperature for several days, or be maintained at 100‹ C. for the necessary time. The specific gravity of the sulphuric acid used should not fall below 1.3 during dehydration and the strength, quantity, and concentration thereof should be such that no solution of the sulphate or substantial formation of soluble acid sulphates occurs. The anhydrous sulphate is washed free from acid and dried, or dried and calcined. Dehydration may also be effected by fuming sulphuric acid at ordinary temperature, or by passing dry sulphur trioxide over the hydrated salt, and phosphoric acid or acid sulphates such as titanium sulphate may be used as dehydrating agents. According to the Provisional Specification, the hydrated salt may first be dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid at say 140‹ C., and the anhydrous salt be then precipitated by dilution; or a mixture of hydrate and sulphuric acid be heated and then calcined; and phosphoric anhydride or glycerin may be used as dehydrating agents.
