Abstract
Spherical granules of soda lime having a convoluted surface are produced by agitating soda lime fines, or materials capable of forming soda lime, in the presence of water, water vapour or an aqueous solution of a strong alkali such as sodium, potassium, lithium, or barium hydroxide. The following methods of treatment are specified. (1) The fines are agitated in the presence of a spray of water, followed, if desired, by the addition of finely divided slaked lime and subsequently a spray of caustic soda solution. The spray of caustic soda solution may be followed by a spray of water. The granules may be treated with 10-15 per cent of Portland cement, aluminium hydrate or kieselguhr. (2) Slaked lime may be agitated in the presence of a spray of caustic soda solution, followed, if desired, by a spray of water. The treatment may be conducted in a rotating drum, the liquid being added in such amount that about 25 per cent of water is present. The rate of agitation is preferably decreased towards the end of the treatment. The dried product contains 10-20 per cent of water.
