Abstract
361,366. Feed water supply systems for steam boilers. ECCLES, W., 15, High Lane, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 14, 1930, No. 21334. [Class 123 (ii).] A surge tank 18 between the condenser extraction pump 17 and the boiler-feed pump 11 of a closed supply system is connected to the system by a pipe 19 through which water is admitted to the system -fromthe -tank when the pressure on the boiler side of the feed pump falls below a certain value, and by a pipe 21 through which excess water passes from the system to the tank when the pressure on the outlet of the feed pump rises above a certain value. The flow of water to and from the system through the pipes 19, 21 is controlled by valves 23, 25 operated by the pressure in a supply pipe 16 between the supply main 14 and a boiler 1. A valve 24 in the pipe 20 between the tank and the main 8 receiving the extraction pump delivery opens automatically to admit large quantities of water to the system in the event of the failure of the extraction pump. A valve 26 opens automatically when the pressure in a supply pipe 16 becomes excessive and allows large quantities of feedwater to return to the surge tank. All the feed heaters 9, 10, 12, 13 may be arranged between the extraction and feed pumps. A multi-stage extraction pump of the kind described in Specification 361,389, [Group XXVI], may be used. 'The speed of the pump may be varied in accordance with the water level in the condenser. When a variable-speed feed pump is used, its speed may be controlled by the extraction pump or by the pressure in the feed pipes 16.
