[Class 142 (iii).] Shuttle-changing mechanism.-A loom for weaving with two kinds of weft has two drop boxes 30, 31 at one side of the loom and a double transfer box B and a double celled magazine M at the other end, weft exhaustion being indicated in the boxes 30, 31 and change of shuttle effected on the following pick, when the lay is at or near its rear position, the new shuttle coming from one or other cell of the magazine M as determined by the active card of the pattern change mechanism 37 for the drop boxes 30, 31. When either acting shuttle is exhausted the mechanism 37 through the levers 38, 53, rod 52, and switches U, L closes a circuit through one or other of the solenoids 71, 72'and by means of a hook 86, 88 springs one of the levers 83, 84 into line with a cam 91, 92 on the low shaft 93 and thus causes a wire 94 or rod 95 to be pulled. The pulling of the wire 94 turns a shaft 114 to bring a rubber holding pad 123 against the second shuttle in the cell SF of the magazine M and withdraws the finger 116 so that the bottom shuttle in the cell SF falls on to the plate 125, or the pulling of the rod 95 through a lever 140 and plunger 137 pushes the bottom shuttle from the cell SR on to the plate 125. The plate 125 is carried by pivoted arms 127 and kept in normal position by a spring 128, but at shuttle change the box B is lifted, its lid is opened by a lug 167 on it engaging a cam 168 on the magazine, while lugs 172 push back the plate 125 allowing the new shuttle to fall into the upper cell of the box R. The exhausted shuttle enters the lower box 179 and is discharged down a shoot 180 at the next beat-up. Either lever 83, 84 when depressed moves a bell crank 150 and lever 154 to lock a lever 162 to another lever 159 which is oscillated by a cam 160 on the shaft 93 and thus through the rod 164 causes the box B to be lifted, or the lever 162 may be locked to the lever 159 by means of a solenoid in a circuit 80 common to both solenoids 71, 72. The magazine M is of the section shown in Fig. 17, the threads from both front and rear shuttles being secured to the same holder 130.
