Abstract

360,551. Personal flight apparatus. McKINNEY, C. F., Latta Road, Rochester, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 2, 1930, No. 26192. [Class 4.] A flying apparatus comprises a pair of wings adapted to be held in place by each arm of an aviator each wing being adapted to engage under an armpit and means being provided on each wing to enable them to turn axially with the arms and means to allow of it being warped to follow movements of the arm or of parts thereof. Each wing, Fig. 1, comprises a main built-up rib 1 defining the wing contour and convexly curved subsidiary ribs, 3, 4, 5 supporting the covering. The rib 1 is formed with a curved indentation 6, Fig. 5, which fits under the armpit, and the covering carries straps on the upper surface through which the aviator passes his arms to grasp the outer rib 5. Flexible joints 10, 11, which may be formed of rubber tubing, in rib 1 enable the wing to warp as the arm is bent. Additional stiffness may be obtained by the use of a transverse rib 12 and/or bracing wires 13, 14. In another form, a flexible wing is employed in which the rib 1 extends from the point 2, Fig. 5, around the leading edge to the tip and is composed of the quill portions of feathers, of which the feather ends form part of the wing covering, the whole of which is formed by series of feathers as shown. A framework such, for instance as shown in Fig. 1 may be incorporated.
