Abstract
28,638. Bleriot, L. Dec. 19. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement of.-An aeroplane is made with its parts detachable for transport purposes. The body is hinged at b on its upper side, and the parts are automatically locked by spring latches c<2> controlled by the aviator. The planes and skids are detachable, and the elastic suspension of the front landing-device can be put out of action to enable the front part of the machine to be lowered as shown in Fig. 2. The machine can rise without a run from the position shown in Fig. 4. The steering-wires are passed through the axes of the hinges b so as to be unaffected by relative movement between the various parts of the body. Shock of landing, deadening; starting.-The landing-devices may be formed of bent elastic parts i such as bamboo, crossed and detachably secured to the machine. The elastic device e of the front landing-wheels or skids may be disconnected by raising the rings g off the hooks f by means of a lever fulcrumed on the pin f<0>. The detachment of the elastic device causes the body of the machine to be lowered. When the two parts of the body are arranged as shown in Fig. 4, the machine can rise without a run, the two parts coming into line when the machine leaves the ground. Propelling.-A more powerful engine than is necessary for normal flight is fitted to cause the machine to rise without a run from the position shown in Fig. 4. The propeller may be elastic and of variable pitch, and is preferably geared down.
