Abstract

Planes, construction of; steering.-Aircraft wings of variable camber are constructed with ribs composed of tapered upper and lower flexible members movably connected to the wing spars and separated by distance pieces which permit relative lengthwise movement. The deformation of the wings is effected by levers within the wings which act upon a rear spar or upon a rear spar and the leading edge member. Fig. 1 shows a rib in which a lower flexible member 2 is secured to a front member 3 having a tube piece 4 in which slides an upper flexible member 1. The members 1, 2 taper towards each end. The tube piece 4 is pivoted to a front spar 6 and the members 1, 2 are connected to the main spar 7 by pivoted links 16. Distance pieces 5 with curved ends are placed between the members 1, 2 and are held in place by straps 10 pivoted at 11 to the distance pieces and embracing the members 1, 2. The spars 6, 7 are connected rigidly together as shown in Fig. 9, and the spar 7 supports a shaft 19 having a series of arms 19' having forked ends embracing a rear spar 8. The ends of the shaft 19 have arms 22 movable by cables from the pilot's cockpit so as to effect a variation of the camber of the plane. In a biplane structure the spar 8 of the upper wing is connected by links to that of the lower wing and the levers 22 are omitted from the upper wing. Fig. 16 shows a modification in which the shaft 19 is housed in the spar 7 which is slotted at intervals to accommodate two-armed levers 19<1>, 19<11>, the arms 19<1> engaging the rear spar 8 and the arms 19<11> having pin-and-slot connections with the arms 29 of two-armed levers 29, 28 pivoted to a shaft 25<1> in the front spar 6. The arms 28 engage the leading edge member 30 of the wing. The arms 29 pass through a spar 32, The members 1. 2 slide thhrough brackets on the spars. A modification is described in which the two-armed levers are pivoted around the spars 6, 7 which have rounded bearings formed thereon.
