[Class 23.] Fluid is supplied to a centrifugal machine through one or more orifices or nozzles ; the jets of fluid are dispersed by impinging upon surfaces which are relatively movable with respect to the nozzles. The arrangement can be used to prevent the deposition of solids or viscous substances on the walls of the machine especially during the treatment of paper pulp, or to effect physical or chemical reactions on the materials treated. A machine suitable for the treatment of paper pulp is shown in the Figure. During centrifuging, the heavy impurities are retained by the ring b and the light impurities by the ring c; the purified liquid escapes between the rings b, c and passes to the circular conduit d. Two rings h<1>, h<2> rotate with the drum, the former h<1> being in the form of a truncated cone, and the latter being a plane ring on the drum spider. Nozzles f or perforated conduits are associated with these rings. Gas, vapour or liquid can be supplied through these nozzles and after impinging on the rings h<1>, h<2> is dispersed over the various parts of the machine. Additional nozzles may be placed near the axis of the machine to direct jets on to the material under treatment. Projections on or depressions in the rings h<1>, h<2> help to break up the jets of fluid.
