A centrifuge comprises a rotary drum 2 and a differentially rotating, oval-shaped feed chamber 12 which carries a scraper device provided with one or more nozzles for dis. charging a compressed medium for blowing the solid particles scraped off the wall of the drum towards the discharge end thereof. The drum 2 has a series of spaced rings 4 secured thereto by ribs 5. Two diametrically opposed boxes 14 are secured to the drum 12 at its largest diameter for feeding the mass to be treated into the screen drum along the whole of its height. A box 16 is disposed adajcent each box 14 and carries a scraper 18 provided with nozzle forming guide blades 19. A cylinder 20 is also secured to the drum 12 and carries diametrically opposed sets of sprinklers 21 for supplying washing or treating liquid. The shaft 1 is supported from a bearing block 24 which is mounted in a rubber buffer 25 and supports the gear-box 26. The mass to be treated is fed through a shoot 22 into the drum 12 and thence through the boxes 14 to the drum 2 where it is deposited on the screen walls until removed by the scrapers 18. Compressed air is fed through conduits 31, 32 to space 33 communicating with the guide blades 19 and forces the solids removed by the scrapers through apertures 36, 37 into a funnel 39. The separated liquid passes through the screen wall and flows over a rim 6 into a gutter 7. The centrifuge may be horizontally mounted. The scraper may constitute a plate-like member having a nozzle secured thereto.
