Abstract
359,230. Reservoir pens. VIVIAN, G. S., 237, Norbury Crescent, Norbury, London, and FORD, Ltd., T. B., Loudwater, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Oct. 31, 1930, No. 32778. [Class 146 (iii).] In a nib-retracting reservoir pen, the retracting-mechanism acts also for self-filling purposes. The feed-bar 4 is provided with a short cylindrical chamber 15 in which is slidable the end of a tube 12, disconnection of the two parts being prevented by a nut 16 on the feedbar and a flange on the tube 12. Mounted on the inner end of the feed-bar is a piston 18 slidable between limits imposed by a stop 24 on the tube 12 and the end of the nib-holder 5. The tube 12 is formed at its rear end with a pin 11 extending into a longitudinal slot in a fixed sleeve 9 through a helical slot in a tube 8 rotatable by means of a head 6 on the end of the barrel. Rotation of the head, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, results in the retraction of the nib, through the engagement of the flange on the tube 12 with the nut 16, until valve seats on the nib-holder 5 and piston engage, when the piston is also retracted. Any air trapped behind the piston is forced through an aperture 22 into the tube 12, and thence through the chamber 15 and a passage 23. On the return movement, the tube slides relatively to the feed-bar until its front end engages the end of the chamber 15, when it moves the nib-holder away from the piston and uncovers a passage 17 therethrough. The stop 24 then feeds the piston forward, and ink can be drawn into the barrel through the passage 17. In normal use, ink flows to the nib through the passage 17, and air passes up through the tube and aperture 22. The aperture 22 is in such a position that ink cannot flow therethrough, and when the nib is retracted escape of ink is prevented by the engagement of the valve surfaces on the piston and nib-holder.
