Abstract
257,503. Kovacs, T. Feb. 27, 1926. Nib-retracting reservoir pens; facilitating filling; air and ink supply arrangements.-In nibretracting fountain pen of the type in which a nib-securing ring is adapted to prevent leakage from the barrel when the nib is retracted, the air and ink passages around and through the ring are arranged so that the reservoir can be filled from the upper end when the nib is partly or wholly retracted. The one-piece barrel G is formed at its front end with an internal shoulder B with which the nib-securing ring D co-operates to prevent leakage during writing, and with another shoulder E which divides the interior of the barrel into the reservoir proper F and a small outer chamber C. The chamber C is so short that the point of the nib projects slightly even when the nib is fully retracted. The ring D and shoulder E co-operate to prevent leakage from the barrel when the nib is retracted- A slight clearance is left between the shoulder E and ring D to permit the passage of ink from the chamber C into the reservoir F but not sufficiently large to allow the passage of air when the space contains ink. The air and ink channels J, K respectively in the bar H extend a sufficient distance to prevent the accumulation of ink near the ring D during filling. The channel J extends as far as the helically-slotted member N when the nib is retracted, but the channel K extends as far as the member N when the nib is projected so as to facilitate the steady flow of ink from or into the cavities in the member N. In order to permit the escape of air from the cavities during retraction of the nib, there is provided on the. opposite side of the bar H an air channel L extending from the end of the bar to a point beyond the member N when the nib is retracted. The helical slot M in the member N is provided with a reversely-directed extension M<1> at the front end to prevent rearward movement of the nib during writing, and also to impart a short forward movement to the nib before retraction so that any ink contained in the channels J, K is sucked back and prevented from spurting out of the barrel. The slot M is of coarse pitch so that less than one turn is necessary to project or retract the nib. The member N is rotated by means of a head R formed with an annular groove in which is secured a pin adapted to engage with a pin T fast in the closure member 0 of the barrel to limit the rotation of the retracting-mechanism.
