Abstract
413,246. Fountain pens. JOWITT, J. S., 3, Clifton Square, Lytham, Lancashire. March 6, 1934, No. 7167. [Class 146 (iii).] In a piston self-filling fountain pen, the portion of the barrel in which the piston slides is provided with two ports connected by a channel and so arranged that the compression produced by the first part of the movement of the piston is released during the latter part. The piston 7, which may be formed of aluminium and may be a plain disc, a cylinder with or without grooves, or grooved with usual packing, is slidable in a cylinder 5 closely fitting in the barrel of the pen and provided with apertures 14, 15 connected by a groove 16 in the outer wall. The end of the cylinder is closed by a disc through which the piston rod 9 passes and which is formed with an opening 11. A rod 8 prevents the piston from being pushed too far in. In use, the nib is immersed in ink and the piston withdrawn to induce a supply of ink. The piston is then rapidly returned, so that the compression caused by the movement of the piston until the port 14 is uncovered cannot act to eject ink from the feed-bar before the pressure is released. The action is repeated until the reservoir is full.
