Abstract
18,628. Shotton, W., Green, W., and Green, J. R. Aug. 13. Reservoir pens. - A self - filling pen of the piston type comprises an ink-reservoir u having a cylinder b secured to its upper end, a piston d provided with one or more air - passages j movable within the cylinder, a piston - rod c having a stop e and a valve-closure f between which the piston is movable relatively to the rod c, and one or more air - passages g formed in the body of the pen. A packing h at the upper end of the cylinder b maintains an airtight fit with the rod c, which is provided with a revoluble head i adapted to screw into the upper end of the cylinder. The action of the pen is as follows. When the head i is unscrewed and the piston-rod withdrawn, the stop e carries the piston to the upper end of the cylinder b, the air in the cylinder being displaced through the passages in the piston; when the piston-rod is returned, the valveclosure f closes the passages and a vacuum is formed behind the piston until the piston comes opposite the passages g, which then place the vacuum in communication with the reservoir a, thus causing a supply of ink to be drawn into the reservoir. When the head i is finally screwed in, the piston j seals the lower end of the passages g.
