A retractable fountain-pen has an apertured end part 2 constituting the front end of the barrel 1 which has an inclined, flat front surface 4 bordering the aperture. A closure plate 9 (Fig. 7) with side trunnions 12 is rotatably mounted in the aperture to swing flat against the flat front surface. A spring device (Figs. 8 and 9) comprising a core member 13 fitted in recesses across the aperture, a spring wire wound around the core member, the ends of which are anchored to the core member, and an intermediate part 19 of the spring wire formed into a lever, exerts a spring force on the closure plate to maintain it in contact with the inclined front surface when the pen nib is retracted. In a modification (Figs. 13 to 16) the spring device is made of spring wire and consists of a fixed part (76) rigidly fixed to the pen barrel, leg parts (78) extending longitudinally forward from the fixed part, and a transverse part (79) spanning the front extremities of the leg parts which in so doing extends across the front of the closure plate to urge the same into contact with the flat front surface surrounding the aperture. To project the pen-nib into the writing position, a plunger 54 is moved forwardly relative to the pen's outer casing 24, Fig. 1. This results in a circlip 49 passing through the restricted end 28 of a guide cylinder 27, whereafter it is permitted to expand in an annular gap 38 to retain the pen-nib in the advanced position against the bias of a spring 63. To retract the pen-nib, the plunger 54 is again moved forwardly, whereupon the circlip 49 is compressed into a shift ring 35 (Fig. 11). The plunger 54 is then released whereupon the circlip 49 and shift ring 35 move rearwardly until the shift ring strikes the front end of the guide cylinder 27 (Fig. 12). Thereafter, the compressed circlip 49 enters the guide cylinder 27 to the fully retracted position. Cartridge reservoirs 59 are used to supply ink to the pennib, and a spare cartridge 59a is housed rearwardly of the cartridge in use, within the plunger housing 54.
