Abstract
Diketimide derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, naphthalene, anthracene, acenaphthene, and their substitution products are obtained by treating the said hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof, with 1 : 3-dicarboxylic acid dinitriles, or such dinitrile substituted by alkyl or a bivalent organic substituent, in presence of a metal chloride condensing agent, and a solvent. Substances which produce the dicarboxylic acid dinitriles in the course of the reaction such as cyanacetamide, may also be used. According to examples, acenaphthene, naphthalene, a -methylnaphthalene, b -naphtholmethylether, a -naphtholmethylether, and toluene are treated with malonic acid dinitrile in presence of aluminium and alkali metal chlorides, acenaphthene is treated with cyanacetamide, and anthracene with methylmalonic acid dinitrile the product giving, on oxidation, anthracene 1 : 9-dicarboxylic acid. The product obtained by the above reaction on a -methylnaphthalene gives on oxidation the 1 : 4 : 5-naphthalene tricarboxylic acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes also the use of dinitriles substituted by a bivalent substituent, such as oxygen; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
