Abstract
The tin and bismuth vanadates employed as catalytic materials for the oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons with an oxygen-containing gas are prepared by interaction of stannic chloride and bismuth nitrate respectively with ammonium vanadate in aqueous solution, the precipitate being washed and dried.ALSO:Vanadates of tin and bismuth are employed as catalytic materials for the oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons with an oxygen-containing gas. Thus, naphthalene vapour and excess of air passed over tin or bismuth vanadate yield phthalic acid mixed with its anhydride. Anthracene under the same conditions gives anthraquinone. When toluene vapour is oxidized in the presence of bismuth vanadate, benzaldehyde is mainly formed, but by the use of tin vanadate as catalyst, benzoic acid is produced. Again, benzene vapour and air passed over tin vanadate yield maleic acid mixed with its anhydride. Phenanthrene may also comprise the starting material. The tin and bismuth vanadates may be prepared by interaction of stannic chloride and bismuth nitrate respectively with ammonium vanadate in aqueous solution.ALSO:Tin and bismuth vanadates are prepared by the interaction of stannic chloride and bismuth nitrate respectively with ammonium vanadate.
