Abstract

Highly chlorinated diaryl resins are obtained in a stable non-crystalline form by utilizing the chlorine derivatives of the complex high-boiling fractions of B.P. 270-400 DEG C. which are obtained as a bye-product in the thermal synthesis of diphenyl from pure benzol or benzol containing toluene and xylene. These resins may be prepared by chlorinating the said high-boiling fractions alone, or by chlorinating mixtures thereof with diphenyl, or by adding chlorinated diphenyl after the chlorination of the high-boiling fractions. In the examples, (1) a mixture of 80 parts of diphenyl and 20 parts of the high-boiling compounds is subjected to chlorination in the presence of iron until the product contains the required proportion of chlorine. (2) A mixture of 60 parts of diphenyl and 40 parts of the high-boiling fraction is chlorinated. Products containing 60-65 per cent of chlorine are referred to, and the softening points obtained with various degrees of chlorination of the high-boiling fraction.
