Abstract
A composition suitable for use as a polymerization catalyst, and which dissolves in water to form a yellowish coloured solution, and has a specified diffraction pattern is made by a method comprising admixing aluminium metal, titanium tetrachloride, and an organic solvent capable of dissolving titanium tetrachloride but incapable of reacting with titanium tetrachloride and heating the mixture at a temperature between 80 DEG and 220 DEG C. The aluminium metal is preferably in flake form, e.g. a pigmentary grade flake. The aluminium and titanium chloride are preferably employed in the mixture in such proportions that the titanium compound is trivalent. The inert solvent may be kerosene, mineral spirits, paraffin oil, mineral oil, xylene, toluene, benzene, naphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene, or chlorobenzene. In Example 1, one mole of pigmentary grade flake aluminium metal admixed with three litres of kerosene is heated to 200 DEG C. and three moles of titanium tetrachloride added dropwise to the mixture over a period of one hour, and the crystalline product separated. In Example 2, a similar procedure to Example 1 is used except that mineral spirits was the diluent, and the reaction temperature was 160 DEG C. The crystalline product separated had the following analysis, Ti 23,4%, Al 4,6%, Cl 64,4% and organic matter 7,6% by weight. Specifications 856,644 and 877,050 also are referred to.
