Abstract

Grignard reagents of formula RMgX wherein R stands for a hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical, optionally substituted, and wherein X stands for a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom are made by reacting a compound of formula RX wherein R and X have the meanings set out above, with magnesium and tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a hydrocarbon having a boiling point within the range 75-200 DEG C. Suitable hydrocarbons include benzene, toluene, xylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, kerosene or a petroleum ether fraction boiling within the range 75-200 DEG C. No more than 1 mole of tetrahydrofuran is required for the reaction.
