Abstract
Chloropolysilanes are prepared by passing chlorine and silicon tetrachloride vapours in admixture through a fluidized bed of a finely divided silicon alloy, e.g. calcium silicide or alloys of silicon with manganese, chromium, iron, or nickel at a temperature of 190-250 DEG C. The vapour mixture may contain 1-15 mol per cent. of chlorine and the bed may be first fluidized with silicon tetrachloride vapour alone. All materials in the exit gases condensable at -78 DEG C. are condensed and returned to the vessel in which silicon tetrachloride is boiled to supply vapour. When chlorination is complete and chlorine is no longer absorbed the bed is almost white and the chloropolysilanes, e.g. Si2Cl6, Si3Cl8, Si4Cl10 and higher are obtained by distillation from the silicon tetrachloride boiler. The chloropolysilanes may be used to react with benzene or chlorobenzene to form phenylchlorosilanes. Specification 684,638, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
