Abstract
358,544. Dry closets. JACKSON, E. L., 34, High Holborn, London. June 12, 1930, No. 18090. [Class 26.] In a closet in which a vessel to receive the sewage contains a disinfectant, the vessel 1, Fig. 1, is divided by a partition 2 into an overflow chamber 3 and an inner chamber 4 divided into two sections by a perforated plate 5. Pivoted at 7 on the upper edge of the plate 5 is a shield 8 which in its normal position is partly or wholly covered by liquid 9 and is provided with a curved part which fits in a corresponding part in the partition 2. A pipe 12 maintains a constant level of liquid in the compartment 4. After use the shield 8 is turned by a rod and handle and the solid material is deposited in the outer section of the compartment 4, and is thus separated from the main body of liquid, the plate 5 precluding the return of the solid material into that part of the liquid below the shield. A conduit 13 is provided for the discharge of liquid from the chamber 3. In a modification, Fig. 3, a conical partition 18 divides the vessel 17 into a compartment 19 for the liquid, and an overflow chamber communicating by perforations 20 and conduit 21 with a constant level conduit having an overflow aperture in the side of the compartment 19. The shield 36 is secured to the seat 35, is perforated and provided with a spout 39 through which the solid material is transferred to the part 19 when the seat is raised. A spherical plate 24 is located below the shield 36 and is detachably supported by clips 25 on the vessel 17. In a further modification, Fig. 6, which is also operated by lifting the seat, the shield 59 is provided with a lip 58, a curved portion 61 with an aperture 60, and a vertical portion 57 connected to the seat 56 which rests on the edges of an outer vessel 40. The inner vessel 42 which is provided with a handle 47 for removal is also provided with a partition 67 having a curved portion connected to the vessel 42 and a vertical portion on the upper edge of which is pivoted a plate 64 having a curved lip 65 and a weighted end 68. A constant level of liquid is maintained in the vessel 42 by a pipe 49 and an opening 50 which discharges surplus liquid into a second vessel. When the seat 56 is raised the shield 59 is raised and the solid material is deposited in the vessel 42 and, at the same time, the plate 64 moves into a vertical position and prevents the entry of solid matter, paper, &c. into the compartment formed by the partition 67. In further modifications, the vessel 42 is divided into two compartments, one acting as an overflow compartment and is provided with a ventilating flue; the shield may also be pivoted on the edge of a perforated cup which is supported in the compartment containing the liquid.
