June 16, 1930, No. 18419. Convention date, June 14, 1929. [Class 38 (iii).] Actuating electromagnetically. - The shaft 1 of a controller on an electric locomotive &c. is driven step by step by a motor 6 and is brought to rest at each step by a second motor 5 connected for short-circuit braking. The driving and braking connections are effected by a relay 11 controlled by an auxiliary drum 13 on the shaft 1 and by a relay 12 with a coil 19 in the main motor circuit. In an alternative form the functions of the motors 5, 6 are interchanged when the controller is being turned backwards. The backward movement of the controller can be made at a quicker rate than the forward movement, and the controller may be used for braking the main motors.
