[Class 38 (iii)] Combination of resistances.-In a finely graded control for direct-current traction motors, a resistance D is consecutively connected in parallel with resistances C<1>, C<2> &c. connected in series with the motor armature, - and a drum controller is provided which on rotation first decreases the resistance D stepwise and then cuts out the resistance C<1> and connects the resistance D in parallel with the resistance C<2> before again reducing the resistance D in steps. In the final position of the controller the whole of the series resistance is shortcircuited. The motors are then switched over from series to parallel, the last of the resistances C<1>, C<2> &c. preferably corresponding to the value of the first parallel position. The same resistances may be used for the short-circuit brake. Preferably, two drums are provided, of which one switches in or out the resistances C<1>, C<2> &c. while the other varies the value of the resistance D.
