Abstract

337,859. Stevens, W. A. Aug. 20, 1929. Controllers with brake devices; electric braking systems.-In a system of braking compoundwound traction motors, rheostatic braking is resorted to after regenerative braking has ceased'. During running and regeneration, the motor 1 is controlled by a pedal-controller 22, successively energizing series resistance contactors 16, 16<x>, and thereafter inserting shunt field resistance 5. A brake controller 22<a>, pedal-operated by the same foot as the driving controller, when depressed energizes contactors 31 and 34. The former completes the armature circuit through the normal starting resistance, and its auxiliary contacts 31b complete the shunt field circuit, and the latter short-circuits the series field 2. Further movement of the controller 22a gradually short-circuits shunt-field resistance 5<a>, the resistance being short-circuited during running by a contactor 168. Various modifications are disclosed. During braking the shunt field instead of being separately-excited, may be self-excited, and a relay may be provided to change over from the former to the latter should the supply fail during braking. The brake pedals may, in its various positions, control the series resistance contactors 16, 16<x>. The driving and brake controllers may be so associated electrically, that if both pedals are depressed together, the driving controller is inoperative. And a single pedal and controller may be used in conjunction with a manually-operated switch for both driving and braking connections. Specifications 278,073 and 330,259 are referred to.
